Nitrogen pollution from cesspools and septic systems is the largest single cause of degraded water quality on Long Island and is responsible for approximately 75 percent of the discharge that continues the ongoing degradation of our marshes, bays and beaches. On the East End, cesspools and septic systems are used by virtually every homeowner. Suffolk County and New York State are setting the stage for the eventual transition to the use of alternative, nitrogen-removing systems. During this discussion, presented by members of the Village of Westhampton Beach Conservation Advisory Council, attendees will learn more about how the change will affect the area and more about the homeowner incentives that the county and several towns are offering to incentivize homeowners to get ahead of the curve. Additionally, the discussion will provide information on voluntary actions that homeowners can take to promote water conservation in general, particularly how they can practice sustainable landscaping and lawn irrigation practices.
