The sugar kelp collected by traditional methods from Shinnecock Bay by the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers is indeed a sweet harvest. It removes toxic levels of carbon and nitrogen from the water, can be used for agriculture, and is laying the foundation for green jobs on the East End. But how did this multigenerational collective of Indigenous women, enrolled members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, come together? What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to learn more?
